The purpose of this workshop is to educate attendee with the use of ground based and aerial infrared techniques for wildlife population estimation and site monitoring. The course will provide theoretical and practical information on using infrared. The goal of the workshop is to impart an understanding of the variables which influences successful use of infrared. This will permit researchers to make informed decisions on how and where infrared may provide them with economical and optimal results to ensure the success of their projects.

We will examine habitat and species where this technique has succeeded or failed and key contributions to success or failure. Attendees will have the opportunity to examine natural color and infrared tape segments to see the difference between the two spectral bands. Hands on practice will be available.

The workshop will cover the following topics: principals of thermography, sensor types, how to select a sensor for your application, definition of resolution, relationship between footprint and resolution, how animal behavior influences detection, species signatures or recognition, aviation considerations, and training requirement for optimal results. The workshop is appropriate for researchers and manager interested in an introduction to using infrared for wildlife population counts.

Instructor: Susan Bernatas, M.Sc., Certified Wildlife Biologist, Thermographer, Vision Air Research, Inc.

There is no cost proposed for this workshop.
